Student Innovation Powers KLIMA Resilience: SCC and UBCHEA Deploy Flood Detection System in Pigcawayan
The Kalikasan Laging Alagaan, Iisang Mundo, Mahalagang Panagutan (KLIMA) Movement marked a significant technological advancement as Southern Christian College (SCC), in partnership with the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA), transferred a newly developed flood detection system to the flood-prone community of Barangay Balogo in the Municipality of Pigcawayan on October 10, 2025.
This technology transfer is a major output of the joint initiative, Scholarship of Engagement: Moving with Communities Towards Climate Action. It operationalizes the KLIMA mandate by using academic research to safeguard vulnerable zones against climate hazards.
Mr. Rheyjie John Cabaya, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology student at Southern Christian College and the lead developer of the flood detection system, proved that student innovation is a potent tool for the KLIMA advocacy. During his technical presentation, Cabaya demonstrated how the device translates raw data into a life-saving early warning signal, setting a new gold standard for SCC scholars to design solutions that directly protect the community.
The turnover event was attended by the SCC-UB Project Team: Dr. Neyrma N. Cabatac, Dr. Roche T. Magsayo, and Ms. Lea E. Mostrales and the local stakeholders. Dr. Magsayo emphasized the rationale of the project: effective, real-time detection is crucial for Balogo’s survival in the changing climate.
Barangay Captain Edgar J. Castillo accepted the technology, integrating it into the local disaster management strategy. Mr. Mark Anthony Llegado of the Pigcawayan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reminded residents that being part of the KLIMA Movement means being good stewards which entails maintaining the device to ensure it continues to protect the community for years to come.
