SCC Social Work Students Sharpen PFA Skills, Training as Instruments of Social Transformation
Aspiring social work practitioners from Southern Christian College (SCC) took a significant step in their professional development by completing a focused training session on Psychological First Aid (PFA) on December 9, 2024.
This initiative is deeply rooted in the Student Affairs Office’s Leading with Ethics, Accountability and Purpose (LEAP) Launchpad, a program designed to produce globally competitive leaders capable of navigating complex socio-technical challenges. By equipping students with PFA skills, the college aims to mold them into effective instruments of social transformation within their communities.
The event, held at the SCC Peace and Development Training Hall in Green Valley, Poblacion 8, Midsayap, provided 3rd-year Social Work students with crucial competencies for crisis response.
The session operationalized the LEAP Framework within the context of rapid crisis intervention. Moving beyond simple empathy, students were drilled on the specific stages of Psychological First Aid (PFA). They learned that Ethics means respecting a survivor’s silence; Accountability means providing accurate, not false, hope; and Purpose is found in connecting the vulnerable to the specific resources needed for their recovery.
The meaningful training experience was organized under the guidance of Dr. Rodelio Ambangan, the SCC Vice President for Research and Extension. The students credited his continuous inspiration for motivating them to grow into compassionate and highly skilled social work practitioners.
“As future PFA responders, we are now more equipped and motivated to bring hope and care to those in crisis, embodying the core values of our profession,” stated one of the participants after the training.
This initiative underscores SCC’s commitment to producing graduates who are not only academically proficient but also prepared to meet the demanding needs of community intervention, upholding the core mandate of the social work profession and the vision of the LEAP Launchpad.
