SCC Preps Social Work Interns for Field Hazards with BFP Life Support Training

Prioritizing safety and readiness before field deployment, 28 fourth-year Social Work students of Southern Christian College (SCC) completed an intensive Basic Life Support and First Aid Training held on July 15-16, 2025 at the Educational Media Resource Center (EMRC).

The two-day seminar was conducted as a crucial component of the course SW340: Seminar on Current Trends in Social Work Practice. The initiative aims to go beyond the classroom, ensuring that future social workers possess the practical skills necessary for the unpredictable nature of fieldwork, including survival and safety.

To ensure professional-grade instruction, the department partnered with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Midsayap. The training was facilitated by seasoned emergency responders, namely Fire Officer I Omar A. Calonia, Fire Officer I Kent Devin C. Bangonon, and Fire Officer I John Edgar M. Torcuator.

The training focused on the Chain of Survival, teaching students how to bridge the gap between an accident and professional medical care. The syllabus covered the DR-ABC (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation) protocol, rigorously testing their ability to perform CPR, assess hemodynamic stability (pulse monitoring), and stabilize trauma injuries through proper splinting and bandaging.

Following the lectures, the students underwent rigorous return demonstrations. In these simulations, they role-play scenarios acting as both victims and rescuers, allowing the BFP facilitators to assess their ability to apply what they have learned under pressure.

By mastering these essential first aid skills, the students are better equipped to handle real-life emergencies, ensuring they can protect themselves and the communities they serve during their upcoming fieldwork.
