EmpowerHer Seminar Strengthens SCC’s Partnership with Barangay Sinapangan
The Junior Philippine Association of Financial and Investment Management (JPAFIM) successfully conducted the ‘EmpowerHer’ Financial Literacy Seminar on October 10, 2025 at the Southern Christian College (SCC) VIP Lounge. The activity was specially designed for the women of Barangay Sinapangan. This marks another significant step in the College’s ongoing engagement with the said village as participants were shuttled from the village to the SCC Campus.
Dr. Bobby D. Capa, manager of Aleosan Credit Cooperative, served as the resource person for the seminar. He elevated the discussion from simple arithmetic to the ethics of stewardship. He framed financial literacy not merely as a survival skill, but as a moral responsibility to the future. By teaching participants to view their income as a seed to be nurtured rather than just a resource to be consumed, he instilled a multigenerational mindset, ensuring that economic stability is passed down as a legacy to their children.
The event served as a practical application of SCC’s flagship BE TRANSFORMED Program translating the institution’s vision of social transformation into tangible community action.
The seminar embodied the program’s fundamental shift in how the academe engages with society. Rather than viewing the community as passive recipients of aid, the initiative operated on the basis of a covenant of equal partnership. By treating the women members of the Rural Improvement Club (RIC) of Sinapangan as vital stakeholders, the event focused on mutual respect and capacity building. This approach ensures that development is a shared responsibility between the institution and the residents.
True to the college’s vision of being a “Community-serving University,” the seminar demonstrated that education is most impactful when it transcends the classroom. The organizers brought specialized financial knowledge directly to the community, breathing life into the concept of extension service. By equipping the attendees with technical skills in financial planning, the project ensured that academic expertise addressed real-world economic needs.
The “EmpowerHer” seminar concluded with a deepened commitment to the economic upliftment of Barangay Sinapangan. By empowering women with the tools to manage their finances, SCC continues to fulfill its mission to transform communities through the renewal of minds and the development of practical capabilities.
