Empowering Awareness, Saving Lives: SCC Holds Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar for Women’s Month

In line with the celebration of National Women’s Month, the Southern Christian College (SCC) Gender and Development (GAD) Technical Working Group, in partnership with the Human Resource Development Office (HRDO), conducted a Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar to promote health consciousness and early detection among its employees on March 19, 2026, at the EMRC.

The activity gathered a significant number of female employees from various departments of the institution, along with several male employees who expressed support and interest in advancing women’s health advocacy. The seminar served as a vital platform for education, reflection, and empowerment, which reinforces SCC’s commitment to gender-responsive programs and holistic employee welfare and development.

The highlight of the seminar was the presence of Dr. Helen P. Yambao, an Obstetrician-Gynecologist (OB-GYNE), breast cancer survivor, and an advocate for cancer awareness. Drawing from both her medical expertise and personal journey, Dr. Yambao delivered an insightful discussion on breast cancer, including its causes, risk factors, warning signs, and the importance of early detection.

She emphasized that breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women globally, but it is also one of the most treatable forms of cancer when detected early.

More than the clinical discussion, Dr. Yambao’s testimony as a survivor resonated with the audience. Her story highlighted the importance of resilience, faith, and proactive health-seeking behavior. She encouraged participants to break the culture of silence and fear surrounding cancer and instead foster a mindset of vigilance and openness.

The seminar also highlighted the role of institutional support in advancing health initiatives. By creating spaces such as this, SCC continues to uphold its mandate of ensuring that employees are not only professionally equipped but also physically and emotionally well-informed.

As the celebration of Women’s Month continues, SCC’s Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar stands as a testament to the institution’s proactive stance in championing gender-responsive health programs. Beyond information dissemination, the activity cultivated a culture of care, solidarity, and empowerment, reminding everyone that awareness is not just knowledge, but a powerful tool in saving lives.
