Bridging the Anxiety Gap: SCC Fortifies Interns with Psychological Readiness Tools

Southern Christian College (SCC) took a proactive stance in addressing the mental demands of the workplace today. On January 24, 2025, the Guidance and Testing Services Unit (GTSU), in collaboration with the HEU PeerLink, successfully organized a high-impact Pre-Internship Seminar for all fourth-year college students.

The seminar served as more than just a logistical briefing; it functioned as a psychological intervention for future interns. The transition from the protected academic environment to the high-stakes professional world is often a source of significant stress, known as “anticipatory anxiety.”

The session was designed to help students navigate the “Growth Zone” without entering the “Panic Zone.” By demystifying the corporate environment, the GTSU aimed to lower the cognitive load for students, allowing them to focus on learning rather than fearing failure.

The seminar reframed soft skills not as corporate rules, but as psychological armor. By decoding office etiquette, the facilitators provided a framework for ‘social safety,’ reducing the anxiety of navigating a new hierarchy. Furthermore, they trained students to view feedback through a shield of curiosity rather than judgment—teaching them that correction is data for growth, not an attack on their character.

The collaboration with HEU PeerLink was instrumental in the program’s success. The presence of peer support highlighted that the internship journey is a shared experience, combating feelings of isolation.

By addressing these crucial areas, the GTSU and HEU PeerLink ensure that SCC interns are not only academically competent but also possess the emotional stability and interpersonal resilience required to thrive in their respective internship sites. This initiative underscores SCC’s commitment to holistic support, safeguarding the mental health of its students as they step into their future careers.
